Superflat NB is a creative placemaking, mural art project dedicated to beautifying New Bedford while flattening barriers to the arts.

WHAT DOES SUPERFLAT MEAN?

Takashi Murakami coined the term to express spatial compression and the blending of high and low art in his own work. Inspired by Murakami, Surperflat NB will provide access to the arts by directly engaging New Bedford’s youth, artists, and its residents in the ideation and creation of transformative public art through the traditions of mural-making.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?

Superflat NB aims to foster pride and ownership of shared spaces through public art. We do this by giving local, national, and international artists a role in revitalizing the city of New Bedford while creating inclusive environments where anybody can experience great art. Serving young people is central to our efforts. We want to inspire them and be inspired by them; creating new explorations of culture, expanding social networks, and making connections to resources and opportunities.
