Superflat NB is a creative placemaking, mural art project dedicated to beautifying New Bedford while flattening barriers to the arts.

WHAT DOES SUPERFLAT MEAN?

Takashi Murakami coined the term to express spatial compression and the blending of high and low art in his own work. Inspired by Murakami, Surperflat NB will provide access to the arts by directly engaging New Bedford’s youth, artists, and its residents in the ideation and creation of transformative public art through the traditions of mural-making.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?

The goal of Superflat NB is to foster pride and ownership of public spaces through art making. We realize this by giving local, national, and international artists a role in revitalizing the city of New Bedford while creating an inclusive environment where anybody can experience art. The youth of this community is an important participant and recipient of our efforts. We endeavor to inspire them and expand their cultural point of view by connecting them to resources and opportunities.
